BAFTA Young Game Designers session

Find out how new games are planned and created, and how to design your own with Robert Hamilton and Sally Greig, who work on BBC online games including the current Mission:2010, and Gary Penn, design guru at Dundee-based developer Denki.

Welcome and introduction to the BAFTA Young Game Designers initiative. (Carrick Suite)

Presentation 1: Gameplay

Intro to different types of games (First person, Third Person, Role Play, Puzzle etc)

Groups choose a genre for their game and are encouraged to think about an appropriate format and control mechanisms. (Carrick Suite)

Presentation 2: Characterisation & Storytelling

Intro to the basics of character design, including form, function, movement, motive and mission, and the types of story telling in video games design

Group design their main character, highlighting their key attributes, and plot a narrative progression for the character. (Carrick Suite)

14:50 – 15:10

Presentation 3: Environments

Intro to how locations and settings impact on the game

Groups choose locations for their game, and highlight any attributes that influence the game play. (Carrick Suite)

15:10 – 15:30

Presentation 4: Selling your game

Intro to how games are marketed (looking at the packaging of real games)

Groups create a sentence to help their game stand out from the crowd (Carrick Suite

Break & move to foyer

Mood board creation

Groups complete a mood board which outlines their game. (Foyer)

16:30 – 17:00

Games design pitches and feedback from industry experts

Groups invited to give a two-minute presentation on their game idea. (Foyer)

Wrap up and reminder of competition. (Foyer)

Event ends – children complete evaluation forms, then leave. (Foyer)
